What Can Braces Correct?

Braces are a tried-and-true method for correcting a variety of orthodontic problems, including:

Overbite

Underbite

Overcrowding

Open Bite

Gapped Teeth

Crossbite

Braces can correct these alignment problems in about 18 to 24 months on average. Your total treatment time will depend on the severity of your misalignment.

FASTBRACES, and OrthoFX clear aligners

Straighter Teeth

Straighter teeth look healthier and more attractive than crooked teeth. After your treatment, you can expect a straighter, more dazzling smile that makes you feel more confident.

Fewer Dental Problems

Because straight teeth are easier to clean, you may be less prone to decay and all the problems it can lead to. Additionally, orthodontics can give you a more even bite that puts less strain on your teeth.

Preventative Treatment

When a child receives braces in their developmental stages, the braces can help prevent more complex dental problems later in life that may prove costly to correct.

Cost-Effective

Metal braces are the least expensive orthodontic treatment to correct major misalignment. And braces are highly effective. They also help prevent dental problems that can be costly to fix.

Alternative Orthodontic Treatments

We Offer FASTBACES, Damon Braces, and Invisalign

If you’re an adult or teenager who’s put off by the idea of wearing bulky metal brackets for over a year, you may be curious about alternative treatment options like Invisalign®. Our offices throughout New Jersey offer alternative orthodontic treatments to traditional braces, such as:

Damon Braces

FASTBRACES

Invisalign

What to Expect When Receiving Braces

Once you or your child has been approved for braces, you can expect these steps from one of our New Jersey orthodontists:

Our offices are easily accessible and our team is fluent in several different languages: Russian, Ukrainian, Arabic, Spanish, and Polish.

Preparation

Your orthodontist will take impressions of your teeth. Spacers may be placed prior to receiving your brackets and wires to make room for the orthodontic bands.

Our offices are easily accessible and our team is fluent in several different languages: Russian, Ukrainian, Arabic, Spanish, and Polish.

Brackets and Wires

Our orthodontist will adhere a bracket to each tooth. If spacers were used prior to your treatment, they will be removed. The orthodontic bands are placed and a wire is threaded through the brackets and secured in place with elastics.

Checkups

Your orthodontist will periodically tighten or adjust your braces. You may feel some discomfort after these appointments, but that can be managed by taking over-the-counter pain medication, applying a cool compress to your jaw, and drinking cold water or eating soft, cold foods. This discomfort should only be temporary.

Remove Brackets and Wires

At your final orthodontic appointment, your braces will be removed and more impressions of your teeth will be taken. You will be provided with a retainer to wear, typically at night, to keep your teeth from returning to their old positions.

Maintaining Your Results

With a Retainer After Braces

/

Once your braces have been removed, you will be provided with a custom-made retainer. You may be instructed to wear your retainer for several hours each day and every night indefinitely. This retainer will hold each tooth in its new position as the jawbone heals around it, maintaining your results for years to come.

Frequently Asked Questions

About Braces at NÜVA Smile

What should I expect during my braces consultation?

One of our orthodontists will examine the position of each tooth, the alignment of your jaws, and the shape of your dental arches. We'll capture digital X-rays and 3D panoramic scans for a precise overview. Once your orthodontist has a better idea of your treatment plan, they will be able to provide you with an idea of how frequent your checkups will be and how long you may need to wear your braces.

Which orthodontic option is best for children?

Traditional braces are often the best orthodontic option for children. Kids as young as eight can be eligible for braces! With removable aligners like Invisalign, the patient is responsible for remembering to wear their aligner trays. With traditional braces, patients don't have to remember to wear their braces and they can't be misplaced.

How can I take care of my braces during treatment?

In addition to attending your regular check-ups at NÜVA Smile, be sure to brush after every meal and floss between each tooth once a day. Avoid eating hard and sticky foods during treatment. Be mindful of the condition of your braces, and let your orthodontist know if something's amiss. We can get you in for a quick appointment.
