Inlays and Onlays
Some cases of tooth decay affect more dental tissue than a filling can replace, but don’t need an entire dental crown. Inlays and onlays can provide just the right amount of support following treatment for moderate decay.
NUVA Smile, serving patients across New Jersey, can determine if you need a filling, inlay, onlay, or crown.
What Are Inlays and Onlays?

Inlays
A dental inlay is recommended when damage is located between the cusps (chewing surface) of a molar. In addition, inlays provide an excellent solution for replacing silver amalgam fillings.

Onlays
If damage extends past one or more of the cusps and down the side of a tooth, an onlay can be applied to replace the affected dental tissue.
The Benefits of Dental Inlays and Onlays
Customized Look
Our dentists offer inlays and onlays in porcelain, composite resin, or metal. This means our New Jersey patients can benefit from a tailored solution that meets their budget, needs, and goals.
An Affordable Dental Solution
Inlays and onlays are typically more affordable than a full dental crown and can provide a durable, long-lasting way to repair your tooth. Dental insurance typically contributes to the cost of inlays and onlays since they are restorative.
Protected Oral Health
When decay has been removed and your tooth structure has been repaired, eating, speaking, and living your life becomes easier and more comfortable. Meanwhile, the decay can no longer pose a risk of root canal infections, gum disease, and other concerns.
Receiving Your Dental Inlay or Onlay
The treatment plan for an inlay or onlay generally requires two visits to one of our New Jersey offices.

Anesthesia
Your dentist will administer local anesthesia to keep you comfortable throughout your cavity treatment as tooth decay is removed.
Treatment
Your dentist will treat the cavity by removing the decayed tissue. The tooth structure may need a small amount of further alteration to accommodate your inlay or onlay.
Impressions
Your dentist will take impressions of your tooth. These impressions will be sent to a dental lab where technicians create custom restorations that fit treated teeth precisely.
Temporary
To help prevent tooth sensitivity, a temporary restoration can be placed over the treated area of the tooth until your permanent restoration is ready.
Placement
In one to two weeks, your restoration will be ready and you can return to our office. One of our dentists will check the fit of the restoration, make any necessary adjustments, and bond it in place. Before you leave our office, your dentist will polish the tooth. They will also confirm that the balance of your bite has not been affected, your teeth and jaw are properly aligned, and the restoration fits comfortably.

I’ve been coming here for years and never had a problem. I’m very weird about my teeth and my mouth so when I find somewhere I like, I stick too it. I’ve never had any issues with anyone, starting from the front desk workers to the doctors.
