What Is Root Canal Therapy?
When bacteria enters the inner portion of a tooth through a crack or a cavity, the nerves, blood vessels, and other tissues inside (pulp) can decay and become infected. This infection can spread down the “legs” of the tooth, called the root canals, causing great pain, a risk of the infection spreading to other body parts, and a chance that the tooth will be lost if it’s not treated.
That’s where root canal therapy comes in. During this dental procedure, a dentist or endodontist accesses the inner chamber of the tooth to remove the infected pulp. They then fill the tooth with a rubber-like material and restore support to the outer structure with a new filling or dental crown.
Root canal treatment does much more to relieve pain than to cause it, and it can help you avoid the need for tooth extraction and replacement with a more expensive solution, like a dental implant. The dentists and endodontists at NÜVA Smile in New Jersey and beyond use modern tools and techniques to provide prompt and gentle care for this common condition.

There’s a reason why brushing our teeth twice a day is so important: tooth decay. When we leave food on our teeth, plaque can form. This creates a meal for bacteria. They essentially eat away at your enamel, causing decay, or cavities. Bacteria can also lead to plaque formation between your teeth, which irritates your gums and can cause periodontal disease.
Once you have a cavity, there’s a great way to treat it: visiting a dentist for a filling. Luckily, our team has offices throughout New Jersey and the Northeast, making it easier for patients like you to find the care they need.

Don’t Be Nervous!
Even though root canal treatment is virtually pain-free once local anesthesia is applied, we understand that some patients with dental anxiety, sensitive teeth, or difficulty sitting for long periods can benefit from a little extra reassurance. That’s why NÜVA Smile’s offices offer sedation dentistry. You can choose from multiple options depending on your needs. Does sedation sound like something worth incorporating into your root canal treatment plan? Let’s discuss your options.
